silly sports
People love sports. It’s a chance to come together over a common goal, drink some beer, yell, and maybe paint your face. At CVWmedia, we enjoy sports both as fans and as producers.
Last year, unsurprisingly, we made very few new sports animations, but this year is a whole different ball game. College and university athletics are making up for lost time, and the results are joyful and often silly. All projects featured were made in partnership with Old Hat.
For the 2021 football season, we produced a 3-D version of a popular real-life, on-the-field game for the University of Pittsburgh, the Greats Race. The game features Pitt football legends in mascot form. Hijinks weren’t just allowed but encouraged! Here’s a look at one of the races, complete with spaghetti western-esque music, because why not?
Mascots, as a rule, are always funny. It’s their thing! Exhibit A: the Hartford Yard Goats’ NAPA Auto Parts Race, featuring, for some reason, Twirly. We don’t know a lot about yard goats, but we’re pretty sure he isn’t one.
Fans can be funny too–and used as their own entertainment! We recently did several fan cams (think: kissing cams, for example) for Virginia Tech, meant to feature fans eating turkey legs, munching on popcorn, and dancing! Luckily Virginia Tech’s men’s basketball coach, Mike Young, has a good sense of humor:
Sometimes though, the real sillies are the athletes. In my first couple of years at CVWmedia, we did “get to know” videos for SMU’s athletic teams. Football AND basketball player AND fellow sugar junkie Courtland Sutton stole the show in 2017’s Mustang You Insider:
We need sports for camaraderie and as an excuse to be silly! Adding to the game day environment is something we take seriously. We hope sports fans enjoy our animations as much as we enjoyed making them.
And now, here’s a postscript by Becky:
These are all great examples from recent projects, but as the official CVWmedia Keeper of the Archives™, something has been stuck in my memory for upwards of a decade now. I wasn’t here for the production of it, and when I asked our CEO Kevin for a back story, he said it was an iteration of the classic dot race game, but for a dairy-centric sponsor. Have you ever seen a cow run? Not like this, you haven’t.
And now, if you would, please…choose your cow:
