play list: september 2024
Over the past few years we’ve featured the personalities and tastes of our staff through our Play List blog series, but there are three of us who have remained a bit of a mystery: Record, Play, and Pause. They’re most famous for being the centerpiece of our logo, where they have dutifully served us well, if a little quietly. Earlier this year they finally made their acting debut in our Sizzle Reel, but I thought it was time for all of us to get to know the real Record, Play, and Pause. Enjoy!
If you could binge-watch only one movie or stream one series, on repeat for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Record: Mad Men. Don Draper and I may be long lost twins.
Who would you cast as yourself in a live-action movie?
Record: Danny DeVito is clearly the obvious choice here.
What’s your favorite way to relax after a long day of shopping at the CVW store?
Record: Enjoy a strawberry Squishy while working on my documentary about the history of documentaries.
If you had a superhero alter ego, what would your superpower be?
Record: I’d be the One-Take Wonder; everything gets captured on the first try, and then we all go home early.
If you were to write an autobiography, what would the title be?
Record: My Life, Through My Own Eye
What’s your go-to dance move when no one is watching?
Record: I like to cut up the floor with a little something I like to call the Slow Pan.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
Record: The Jell-O Museum. No reason in particular, if you’re wondering.
What’s your most embarrassing moment on the job?
Record: One time in the middle of an important video shoot I tripped over a cable and totally wiped out in front of everyone. It was embarrassing, but to my credit at least I kept rolling. And also I managed to keep the camera recording.
Who’s your human spirit?
Record: Declan Mulholland.
If you could binge-watch only one movie or stream one series, on repeat for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Play: If I could only binge-watch one movie for the rest of my life, I'd choose Last Action Hero. I love the idea of being able to use a magic ticket to transport myself into the movies. What better way is there to be a part of the action?
Who would you cast as yourself in a live-action movie?
Play: Who else could capture my impressive physical stature and deliver instantly memorable one-liners like the one and only Arnold Schwarzenegger? Let's be real; nobody else could pull it off like Arnold could.
What’s your favorite way to relax after a long day of shopping at the CVW store?
Play: With all the fast and high action answers you'll see from me, you might find it surprising that sometimes I just like to kick back and relax with some simple mind/logic games. I like me some Sudoku.
If you had a superhero alter ego, what would your superpower be?
Play: Super speed! I'm normally stuck to traditional speeds, you know 24fps or 30fps. Sometimes I go as high as 60fps, but man, wouldn't it be great to really pump up that speed? Like 120fps or even 240fps! That would be sweet.
If you were to write an autobiography, what would the title be?
Play: Live-Action Hero. This is of course a play on the title of my favorite film Last Action Hero. However, in my autobiography, I'd cover my exploits in the realm of producing all manner of video and animation.
What’s your go-to dance move when no one is watching?
Play: I have a mad moonwalk. You'll just have to trust me on that one.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
Play: I love viewing large creative video displays with cool animations, so I'd have to go somewhere that has a lot of those going on. I'm thinking somewhere like Tokyo, Japan.
What’s your most embarrassing moment on the job?
Play: This happened pretty recently when we were shooting the new demo reel. On that last shot with me and the gang walking away from the CVWmart, I was looking extra cool—as I do—then tripped on seemingly nothing. I face planted so hard. Thought I broke my nose even. Anyway, everyone had a good laugh at my expense. We eventually got the shot without me doing my face plant routine. I hope that footage was deleted like I was promised it would be.
Who’s your human spirit?
Play: JJ Abrams. His style of high-tech and action-packed entertainment aligns with how I approach my animations. It's also fun to try and work in some hidden little details within an animation, and that goes along with JJ's knack for throwing in the unexpected.
If you could binge-watch only one movie or stream one series, on repeat for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Pause Left: Twins!
Pause Right: The Shining! (long silence) Oh, uh, I also meant Twins.
Who would you cast as yourself in a live-action movie?
Pause: Sam Elliott. He talks pretty slow, which is almost like not moving at all.
What’s your favorite way to relax after a long day of shopping at the CVW store?
Pause: Queueing up a long Netflix binge but NOT pressing play!
If you had a superhero alter ego, what would your superpower be?
Pause: (in unison) Double vision.
If you were to write an autobiography, what would the title be?
Pause: Just the Two of Us.
What’s your go-to dance move when no one is watching?
Pause: Two-stepping, of course.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
Pause: Pause Valley sounds nice.
What’s your most embarrassing moment on the job?
Pause: Being mistaken for Minions. ☹
Who’s your human spirit?
Pause: Maybe Sammy Davis, Jr. (He was also very cool and also only had one eye.)
